Ridley Howard and Notes on Non-equivalents

Ridley Howard at Leo Koening, through April 11th, 2009

Non-equivalents:

Representation and Illustration

Representation, a rendering through search without destination.  A stopping point, yes, requisitely.  Illustration holds the destination preconceived.  Among other places, they seem to function separately in reception; reception by the maker ex post facto and reception by the viewer (reader, etc.).  This may be similar to the difference between teaching and didacticism.

Thomas Gainsborough's Two Daughters, plus notes on equivalents

Thomas Gainsborough
Equivalents 1:

Consciousness equals reality.

Individual consciousness equals individual realities, the only kind accessible to individuals. Collective consciousness, inaccessible.  The distance from one's own consciousness to one other's is the only path we may try, arduously, to travel.  That meandering path itself, without destination, is the home of democracy, centrality, non-hierarchy, imagination.  This gap between consciousness and between realities, this tangible otherness, is the home of a greater electrified scintillating reality.

Visual Forms from Old Choir Books

The exhibition "Choirs of Angels" at the Met in Manhattan is an incredible display of pages from old Italian choir books (1300-1500). The images and design are small, delicate, and inviting (besides the occasions of gratuitous violence). I took a few images of the unique forms and compositions that the ancient design mechanisms yield.

Tony Oursler talks about his work at Metro Pictures

Today I was fortunate to meet and hear Tony Oursler speak about his work which is on view at Metro Pictures in Chelsea.  This was part of a class led by Constance Dejong who is a friend and collaborator.  Tony was very generous with his time and information about his work which is a highly engaging intersection of video, painting, and architectural installation.
